Mixed media collage on canvas
In November 2024, a convicted felon and rapist was elected to the highest office in the US. A slap in the face to survivors of sexual assault, we then had to watch as he systematically chose other perpetrators of sexual violence to fill his cabinet and key positions of power. It feels hopeless. We feel helpless. But we have something he does not: numbers. I realized something crucial the day the election results were announced: I am not special. There are millions more like me in the US alone, survivors of sexual assault who are enraged, devastated, and re-traumatized by a predator being put in power (again). Sexual violence is so common in our country that one in four women will experience it in their lifetime. This statistic is horrifying; but it also means we are not alone. It is time for survivors to stand together against the onslaught on our rights and dignity and make it clear that we will not accept governance by men who commit this violence. It is time to make THEM afraid of US. We are not special. We are LEGION.
